99% of golf instruction are like this

Apply concept on a movement to explain it.

That’s a what and lacks a why and a how.

Issue is that it leads you to think it includes a why and a how.

Leadbetter made Nick Faldo a short hitter and then he was gone from golf. Once you loose athletic action your gone. It has happen to many golfers that become good and then for some reason was thinking their swing needed improvement and then went and changed it.

so the above is like that, a lot of explanations of what but no how and why. Good player, went down the swing shit and then regained his mechanics but his explanations is just a conceptual mess.

C-motion with Lee is a push with the right arm and that isn’t true just what the concept Lee think is there when it answers the what not the why and how.

Modeling means uncover what happens to produce a result either it be a golf swing or leadership. Once that is done you need a system, a practice to transfer key skills to be able to do it. The skills are trained and may have nothing to do with what someone tells you they are doing.

So creating a practice to transfer skills like, start of back swing, transition, down swing is then needed and then one need to understand what is done and how its done so one can answer why to do it that way. After 150 or so years of golf instruction someone should have figured that out by now.

Sadly not the case.

Swinging like Mike Austin for example wont mean you can train someone to swing like you did and we seen that with Mike Dunaway and others Mike Austin trained. The concept he thought he did and the way he transferred skills didn’t work properly.

You cant fix that with any concept.
You need to know why and how.

Once you do your then able to train yourself to do the proper movement and sequence to understand how the body will move in a golf swing.

That you can crush the golf ball, swing great wont mean you can train people to do it in an easy fashion, The better the instruction the easier the transfer is and the better your able to perform.

As I applied this template developed meant that whatever I told Hans worked didn’t mean it would work for me or anyone else, that he can do it don’t mean the same instruction would work for me. So the last 8 weeks I plow trough the code and instruction and skills to define down the essence. First massive concepts sorting.

First session lacking power, that was easy to note what to do after analyze. Pivot was next and that took 8 weeks. With that I could also work the back swing, transition and down swing and know what to train to do. Next is practicing that to find out if skills do transfer and if something is missing or if its complete.

Improvement is done trough applying difference to create variation to be aware of what one does and what one needs to do.

Code instruction set transfer skills in the golf swing

Made significant progress there to analyze what muscles needed to do things in what order. It has allowed a more specific sequence to be trained and one can then position oneself properly in the transition phase which is the most difficult thing to get right in golf.

I made improvement directly once I started to do that and transition and down swing is now getting continuous improvement by the day.

This also has shown me why its been so difficult with moving properly in the golf swing and why drills and concepts people talk about often isn’t near what happens.

Getting closer

Modeling building models is a bit like a huge puzzle, you have the image but then you have so many bits that doesn’t belong there that are extra and you need to sort those bits out that don’t belong in the framework of that puzzle image and its result/behavior.

Applying a template is a lot about sorting out what dont work and what does not work.

In Bruce Lees words, “Absorb what is useful, discard what is useless and add what is specifically your own”

The golf swing is similar to martial arts, we have our own style our own body build and our own timings. Today I made another such sorting happening, identifying what to do what worked and did some nice improvements.

The template applied

puzzleIts like a puzzle, you know what it looks like the framework but you still haven’t got all the bits into their places yet but you know one thing, all the bits that are there are all that needs to be there.

So one then apply each concept at each point, then apply the skill and if the skill used don’t match the template one then change skill. (skill=behavior)

That can be daunting for some, talked to Hans, and he applied what I learned today, which refined things for him so he could improve.

So it took 6 weeks but then the pivot worked the way it should now.

When you don’t know and want to know how to do

Running the template means I can focus solely on what works, adjust what I do but then I may encounter where I don’t know how to do things. Then its time to figure out what to do.

Last night I had that moment.

I watched myself hit a 4i and was thinking ok that’s not it. So what to do then that’s the way to do it?

So I realized something that been bugging me for a while and then as I understood I had to go outside and test things and then I had a problem.

So How do I do that when I cant do that?

I apply variation of feedback. Your about to re-learn what to do but to do so you want to test a few variations, attend the feedback and adjust what your doing when the difference is there to know what to do. Then applied variance takes place again until the shoe fits when the movement works so one is doing it.

One then can do it, knows how to do.

However at this point one may even not realizing that as it may not feel, correct.

Your old habits, familiar feelings comfort may with how memory works interfere and draw you away from what works.

It happens to everyone. As I watched the 4i mechanics I was like, ok I reversed back here, need to fix that even though I started to alter and change my back swing I knew I needed to explore something as I wasn’t doing things properly.

So last night I had this moment and got the message, I need more variance and fix that as I finally understood this what I did do, wasn’t working as it should.

I discovered something new.

Today becomes then a day at the range to uncover the missing information as my job or practice today isn’t about hitting a ball but to relate to what I am suppose to do and discover that and then I find how it works out with the ball.

Applying the template around 6 weeks later

A template is a frame that fits in a particular way, its based on what works.

Once the template was formed then the coding to develop the instruction manual took place.

  • The power move.
  • The pivot impact move
  • The swing move.

Over the weeks I worked on getting things working within the framework of the template. I had to find ways to teach a particular movement since if I couldn’t do it for some reason i found a way to isolate the movement to do it.

During this it become obvious that coordination was at best, difficult to get right not to say if I ever could. Yesterday I had a breakthrough based on perceptions and my work with the brain then overlapped into golf it made sense and went and hit a bucket and was striping things.

I knew one thing, this I can do.

Still got a few things to improve but ball striking was working. I knew I can swing any club now without any issues what so ever. It was done, completed the task of finding the code for the golf swing to fit the framework of the template.

Having a template means you know what should be there to make it work. It don’t mean you can do it but knowing what needs to be there however  allows you a sorting program for feedback to include what should be there vs what shouldn’t. The code to transfer skills and I call them “moves” as your moving to include the skills needed are training formats that teaches you the skills needed as your isolating the movements one needs to have.

so for me it took 6 weeks to have a swing that wont go away ever.

I still need to work on some take away and back swing still as I have 25 years of movements learned that will be next on the list to do.

My knowledge and understanding why golf been difficult to learn has taken a quantum leap along the way. If I can transform my swing and amateur mechanics after 25 or so years into a pro level down the line means one can start rewriting the difficulty factor into something else.

Practice is getting there

While I am tired, resting from Saturdays round I found myself the last few days tinkering and today that went into the big lightbulb moment.

While I still have a bit to go my ball striking improved directly beyond anything I ever done before. It went from complex to, easy.
